Candidate meet and greet
The Burke County Democratic Party will sponsor a meet and greet for Mo Green, candidate for NC superintendent of public instruction, and Sharon Ivester Everhart, candidate for the Burke County Board of Education, at 12:30 p.m. at Mountain View Recreation Center, 645 First St., Morganton.

Free bingo
The Lake James Community Center on NC 126 will host free bingo from 6-9 p.m. Hot foods, including fish and hot dogs, will be available for purchase to eat-in or take to-go. Door prize drawings will also be held throughout the evening. The public is invited.

Good grief meal
AMOREM will host a Good Grief Meal at Abele’s Family Restaurant, 2115 S. Sterling St., Morganton, at 3 p.m. The meal is an opportunity for anyone experiencing grief and loss to come enjoy food and fellowship. Hunt for Stars and Stripes
The town of Valdese and Farris Insurance will host a hunt for stars and stripes for children in downtown Valdese from 8 a.m. to noon. Bring your kids to search along Main Street from Carolina Street to the Old Rock School for one American flag. Find a flag and take it to Farris Insurance to get a special prize. Limit one flag per child. More than 250 flags will be hidden.
SATURDAY, JULY 6
McDowell House Patriot Day
The Historic Burke Foundation will host McDowell House Patriot Day during its first Saturday program from 1-7 p.m. at the McDowell House, 119 St. Mary’s Church Road, Morganton. The house will be decorated for this celebration. Come learn about the McDowell family through docent-led tours of the house, restoration kitchen, and garden. Interactive activities will be set up in the yard for children and adults to participate in colonial games and toys; Patriots visiting telling their stories along with music on the front porch, revolutionary weaponry including the mockup firing of a Revolutionary War Firelock (musket), butter making, herb demonstrations and more. Gift shop items will be available for purchase and food options will also be available for purchase. A variety of food options will be available from local food trucks. Admission is free.
